Rust & Barnicles

We noticed that we had rust coming out of the water maker drain that was staining the side of the hull. Judy scrubbed it off a couple of days ago, but yesterday we noticed it was back. There should not be anything in there to rust, so I will have to disconnect lines until I find the source.

Since we have been in La Paz we have experianced an infestation of barnicles on the bottom of our boat. The water here is dirty also so I refuse to get into it. We will take the boat to the islands where the water is clean and scrape the bottom. All summer in the Loretto area didn't produce any where near as many barnicles as three weeks here did. That is except Puerto Escondido that produced a lot, but still not as many. P.E. also has dirty water.

  1. I can understand the barnicles in different ports, but the rust at the watermaker drain has me baffled. Let us know what you find out.

  2. Coyote, I checked out the line by following it back to the pressure valve and there is simply nothing there that can rust. Everything is either brass, stainless, or plastic. I can only think of one other possible cause (minerals in the water). This happened after we filled our tanks at Marina De La Paz and then backwashed the membrain. So that's my guess!

  3. Makes some sense, your filter is catching organisms and solids bud not desolved minerals. If the desolved mineral concontration is high enough it can convert back to a solid when it comes in contact with the side of the boat. You probably do not need totake any iron pills.
